The Black Hills Institute of Geological Research (BHI) is celebrating 50 years of spectacular discoveries, amazing stories, and world-class fossils.
BHI was founded in 1974 by Peter Larson and James A. Honert. Later, after Jim’s departure, Robert Farrar became a co-owner and partner in BHI. Together, these two individuals, each bringing a unique set of skills and expertise, built a remarkable collection of geological and paleontological specimens.
This original collection has grown over the last 50 years to one of the world’s finest and most comprehensive research collections of minerals and fossils. In 1978, BHI purchased its current headquarters and museum home in Hill City, S.D., where visitors to the Black Hills can experience many of these rare specimens for themselves.
To help celebrate these eventful and extraordinary decades, BHI has special events planned from March 11 to March 16, including free admission to their Hill City museum, educational tours every hour, guest lectures, and other family-friendly activities. It all concludes on March 16 with a screening and post-screening panel discussion of Dinosaur 13 at the Elks Theatre. This Emmy-winning documentary chronicles BHI’s role in the discovery of the largest and most complete T. rex fossil ever discovered.
