At 2 p.m. Thursday, November 9th, the Custer School District will present an hour-long Veterans Day program in the Custer City Armory. For 23 years the program has been sponsored by the American Legion and completely run by students to honor area veterans. It consists of Civil Air Patrol flag posting, patriotic music performed by all classes, the band and the choir, POW/MIA ceremony, a guest speaker, remembrance of veterans deceased over the past year, individual recognition of each veteran in attendance by Custer Cub Scouts and the 6th Grade Class, and Civil Air Patrol flag retirement. This year’s guest speaker will be Hugh Holmes, Commander of the South Dakota Department of the American Legion. Department Commander Holmes along with school and local officials will be available for interview following the program.
This is a large community event involving the entire school district. It shows small town America at its patriotic best. Because it is being conducted this year 2 days prior to Veterans Day (due to the 4- day school week), it offers all a great opportunity to extend their Veterans Day activities.
